America’s Mental wellness Ambassador, Lakiesha Russell , LPC shares her vision on mental health.

What exactly are you into? What is your business all about?

Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Wisconsin and known as America’s Mental Wellness Ambassador™. I’m the visionary and founder of The Evolving Chair Counseling and Consulting Agency in Milwaukee, WI where I support children and women to heal to be able to evolve into their best self to live their best life.

While also being a leader by changing the face of mental health through social media, community and education.

Please, can our readers get to know you?

An advocate for breaking down the shame and fear around all things mental wellness among the black and brown community. I enjoy speaking and hosting community events to help individuals and groups connect to a therapist and gain better insight on the importance of good mental wellness practices/routines.

A woman of faith who loves to serve in ministry at my church; in the children ministry and as the head of the mental wellness ministry. I enjoy spending time with my children and cheering them on from the sidelines at my son’s football games and my daughter’s basketball games, yes I’m that parent, lol.

In addition, I love to cook and bake and would love to create a fun web/TV show around that. My favorite food is taco salad and I love cheesecake.

What inspired you to get started?

As a matter of fact, I knew that I was purposed to do more and had more work to do within my community than what I was. I saw the need to have more dialogue around mental wellness to help individuals evolve into the best version of themselves.

Eventually,  I started my podcast, The Evolving Chair Podcast. The mission of the podcast is to eliminate the stigma in the black and brown community through everyday conversations with individuals, to help connect the importance of our body, soul and mind aligning in order to evolve into our best self.

Over this past year, the podcast has evolved to where I have been able to have different guests that include: therapists, psychologists, national recording artists, medical providers, pastors, community members, etc. to share about their life, their own mental wellness journey and share on topics that impact your mental wellness like friendships, stress, comparison, mental health illnesses, physical illnesses, etc.

As the podcast started to grow, I felt led to begin my private practice shortly after and it has definitely morphed into so many gifts and desires being awaken in me.

What is your educational background?

Bachelor of Arts in Behavioral Science/Psychology from Mount Mary University (previously Mount Mary College)

and a Master of Science in Community Counseling from Mount Mary University

What are your motivations?

My motivations are my children and them seeing their mom make her dreams a reality and being able to see my community begin to heal which will help heal the generations after.

What advice do you have for other people who want to do this same thing?

I have so many things, I know I can’t share them all but I’ll share the top ones:

1. Be creative and innovative – create your own lane while being consistent in it!

2. Create a self care routine and practice it regularly, because you are no good when your cup is empty or you’re running on fumes.

3. Don’t get caught up in comparison trap because that truthfully kills your creativity and then you find yourself trying to do what others were called to do and prolonging what you were purposed for. Your gifts and talents are what makes you, you.

4. You can make money as a therapist, we have to let go of that poverty mindset in this field.

5. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t pass the National Counselor Exam (NCE) around the first time. I had to take the test three times and passed on the third time around ( If you need encouragement/support don’t hesitate to connect with me). I guess that’s what makes me go so hard to build my empire and be a leader in my community on mental wellness.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

In 5 years I envision my empire thriving that’s providing the best quality mental wellness services through therapy, events, speaking, training, etc. I’ll be recording one of the top TV show’s in the nation with great guests from around the world sharing with the audience on all things mental wellness and will have released four books and on my third book tour. I will be living my best life as a wife and mother of two teenagers and enjoying every moment of it!

Any present or future projects?

Yes I’m currently working on my first book and I’m planning some events for next year so stay on the look out because you might find me in a city near you hosting and speaking! I always host Mindful Mondays on Facebook and Instagram live on Mondays at 8pm cst, that focuses on different topics to help us be a little more mindful during the week.

Are you Married or Single?

I’m currently single but I’m the mother of two great children, Josiah and Janiyah
