Sundance film Native Son is coming to HBO on April 16th. Based on Richard Wright’s 1940 novel under the same title, the film retells the story about a young African-American man (Ashton Sanders) who takes on a job chauffeuring a rich businessman (Bill Camp) and becomes introduced to a new and scary life of money and power.

Actor Ashton Sanders got his breakthrough in Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight. Kiki Layne, who plays Sanders’ girlfriend, is known for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk. Other cast members include Nick Robinson, Sanaa Lathan, Elizabeth Marvel, and David Alan Grier.

Native Son is directed by artist Rashid Johnson, who made his directorial debut after moving from the arts to the movie theater.

According to Art Net News, “the film’s screenplay was written by playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama.”
